Málaga CF u10 goalkeeping
Some great goalkeeping work out of Málaga CF’s academy in Spain.
Like many of the videos I post on this channel there always seem to be more to an exercise the closer you look at it.
The two goalkeepers start by doing some jogging and stretching from one edge of the box to the other.
From there, the two keepers and the trainer form a triangle from the goal line and post to post and as far out as the 18.
1. Two-touch passing: in the first exercise the trainer and the other keeper pass to the goalkeeper alternately. All passes are two-touch. This is more than just passing back and forth. It also reinforces the tactical concept of switching the play from one side of the field to the other, which all keepers should look to do as often as possible. Notice that after each pass the goalkeeper moves to the opposite post to receive the next ball. This is reinforcing the concept of a goalkeeper adjusting his position to cover/protect his near post.
2. One-touch passing: the same as above but the passing is one-touch. Again, an important part of this is the keeper moving his feet to cover the near post and receive the ball.
3. Serves to hands: the trainer drop-kicks the ball to the goalkeepers hands. The goalkeeper throws back to the trainer. Every few saves the trainer will tell the goalkeeper to play the ball to the other player. When this is to happen, the goalkeeper will roll the ball to the feet of the other player. That player will pass the ball back one-touch and the goalkeeper will also pass one-touch to the trainer.

I often get the question: ‘how can I make my players less afraid of contact in the game.’ Like most things in the game, you can’t just ‘tell’ players what they have to do. They have to be ‘trained’ to do it….over and over and over in order to make them more comfortable. This is probably the easiest way to get young players more confident when challenging for the ball and I’ve seen it done at a number of top clubs.
The players stand side-by-side. At the trainers signal the players go shoulder to shoulder. These players are u14 so there is a bit more force involved, which is appropriate. For younger players (u8/9/10) the more important thing is that they line up shoulder to shoulder and make contact in the right place and not so much how hard they are hitting each other.
Progression: I saw a version of this done at Ajax’s academy that included a ball positioned about 10 yards in front of the players. At the trainers signal the players go shoulder to shoulder then race to the ball. First player to the ball gets a point.
Another variation this exercise is to have the players go chest to chest.

Twelve-year-old Kai, who is the eldest of former England captain Rooney's four sons, signed his first contract with United in December 2020.

This is great. Try it with your teammates. The challenge is to get your opponent to move one of his feet by making him think you are actually passing him the ball. If he moves one feet, even a bit, he is out.
