A few days before the Trout season started I went down to my local river to check the health after the raging floods of winter. The creatures (some in larval form) I was looking for were as follows - in order of river health: Stoneflies: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plecoptera Mayflies: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mayfly Caddisflies: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caddisfly Freshwater shrimp: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gammarus Water louse: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asellus_aquaticus Sludgeworm: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tubifex_tubifex Rat-tailed maggot: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rat-tailed_maggot Turns out that all the invertebrates associated with good water quality (toward top of list) were present in good numbers so things are looking good for the fishing season. As well as catching some decent trout on dry flies I took the opportunity to go into greater detail about fishing methods, fly life and fish behavior for the benefit of anyone wanting to know more about the technical side of fly fishing. In rivers it is much more complicated than fishing still water since casting technique, invertebrate recognition, fish behavior, current, stealth, correct fly choice etc. are essential skills to successful river fishing. Future videos will have tips and tricks spread through them too as I like making the long form videos - there's already a nation of people hauling one fish out after another in short videos so to share some knowledge with viewers who are really interested in the hobby can never be a bad thing.
