Companion Plants for Roses
Veggie gardeners know the value of companion planting, but the very same concepts apply to selecting good companion plants in your ornamental garden beds. Roses make excellent neighbors, and they benefit greatly from the biological diversity of sharing beds with other plant families. In this video, I talk a bit about the carrot, daisy, mustard and mint families - which make wonderful additions to the rose garden. Aside from supporting beneficial insects and stable pest populations, companions help to round out your ornamental display with different colors, textures, bloom form and timing.

Lavender has a reputation of being difficult to grow from seed. Much is made of their need for refrigeration or high light levels, but in truth the greatest difference you can make to seeding success comes with your choice of seeds! Here I'll go back through the basic conditions, but also recommend what you should be looking for in a seed supplier to help ensure fast, even germination. I've seen some homestead enthusiasts turn a blind eye to ornamental plants in favor of traditional veggies and fruit trees. I definitely respect the goal of growing food and becoming more self-sufficient, but why narrow your assortment of useful plants? When a rose drops "out of the trade" there's a risk that it also falls out of the hobby. Demographic changes have taken their toll on rose suppliers, concentrating some large portion of sales into "landscape style" roses. Meanwhile, old garden roses and other garden-worthy modern roses are left to individual gardens and hobbyists to preserve. Here's a quick project for support of a pillar rose. Rose pillaring is a space-saver in the garden - while a fence or arbor is great for training a climbing rose, a pillar takes advantage of a relatively narrow space. This version is made from galvanized chain link fence top rail, so it's quite strong. I've also added horizontal supports (made from EMT conduit ) to help secure the rose to the pillar. Winter is a secret weapon for us in temperate climates! Insect pest, fungus and bacteria become inactive along with our roses & other garden plants, leaving us an opening to disinfect and sanitize for the coming season. For plants (like roses) with known susceptibility to a range of foliar diseases, this is an opportunity I don't want to waste - so I spray susceptible varieties with dormant oil & lime sulphur. I sometimes follow up (or alternate years) with a bordeaux mix application. In this video, I'll answer questions about dormant spray and winter sanitation. Even as we're faced with the long and hotter days of summer, it totally makes sense to prune your roses, other spring blooming shrubs and perennials. For repeat bloomers, this will help speed a return to flowering. For once-bloomers, it's a good time to address size, shape and health - and still give time for the plant to ripen stems for flowering the following spring.
