PATRICK SHAW STEWART worked at Imperial College, London, on his invention the Droplet Reactor, a very early microfluidic device that he patented in the early 1980s. He also worked with Professor David Blow to develop IMPAX, the first “robot” that was specifically designed for protein crystallization. In 1987, another Imperial scientist and Shaw set up Douglas Instruments Ltd, a company that has made systems for automatic crystallization ever since. JULIA BACH graduated from Western Washington University in 1998 and went into the biotech industry. Her principal areas of focus in biotechnology have been cell culture and downstream process development, high throughput screening of small-molecule candidates, and viral clearance. She currently works at Amgen as a subject matter expert and team leader for viral clearance studies.
