The Century of the Self, Episode 1 of 4 - Happiness Machines
Edward Bernays, Sigmund Freud’s nephew, was the father of public relations in the early 1900’s. He manipulated Americans into buying things they did not need by appealing to their unconscious desires. Bernays used Freud’s teachings to control people and worked with large companies and politicians to convince people to buy their products or buy into their rhetoric.

Bernays called this practice; the “engineering of consent”. He made many things popular that are still prevalent today. Bernays is responsible for selling smoking cigarettes to women by using Freudian psychology to convince women cigarettes were “Torches of Freedom”, symbols of women gaining their independence from men. (we know in retrospect it only ‘liberated’ them of their health and longevity)

Bernays created the consumer culture that we have today. This sickening culture of everyone being centered solely on themselves and doing whatever makes them happy, including buying items, regardless of how it affects themselves and those around them. He is an important figure to understand, and his work must be understood by future generations.

This four part documentary is an extremely important piece of the puzzle of just how the social engineering of humanity became high-tech and big business. This is important to understand, because the ultimate manifestation of this system is what we are living in today!
