Feelin like a gone-ass limb right after I moved to Nashville, I wrote the poor, severed blues.
Poor, Severed Blues
all fogged up by contradiction
dubious claims of nuclear fission
following flawed intuition
caught up in a dream
it's like when I spoke up you all turned weak
when I said "not the other cheek"
I mean, whatever happened to all of the courage
you required of me?
did you even know that your voice sounded strange?
were you even really aware of your bleating range
when you shimmied out into the great unknown?
you all: short-sighted as me
me: long-armed as the law
reached out for a helping hand
only found a claw
or the calling of a crow
made me heartsick to know
that I was born of a desire
and the vagaries of a fictional fire
my hands were tied, I nearly died
just trying to be understood
it was in the anteroom there when I figured I'd stay
when I heard the sounds of the country & western radio play
"big city turn me loose and set me free"
but I swear that I never felt so fucking alone
as when you were minutes away, didn't answer your phone
I just sat in East Park holding onto a part
of a poor, severed, broken heart
did you even know that your voice sounded distant?
were you even really aware that I was scared of persistence?
by the rising and in the light of the waning moon
you all: blind as a bunch of bats
me: long-armed as the law
reached out for a helping hand
I didn't find a friend
just the calling of a crow
made me heartsick to know
that I was born of a desire
to be not herded, but heard
cut down by the wire, everything got so dire
as I was struggling to be understood

Elephant Grave
Words and Music by: John Isaac Davey
What about me makes me aberration?
What about the atrophy?
Tell me 'bout the vision of the man you had
That you always wanted me to be
What about the not-quite-stable?
What about the simmering sea?
But I guess that you just always
Wanted something simple
Written in key of C
So go on
You got what you came here to get
And I got my chemical burns
But I have information you wish you had
You've got a lot to learn
And I will tell you 'bout my deadened nerve endings
If you tell me 'bout your scars and stripes
What about the totally unordinary
That you always wanted me to hide?
Poor John Merrick would be green with envy
He's turning in his elephant grave
And all the while fair weather friends
They are telling me how to behave
So go on
You got what you came here to get
And I got my chemical burns
But I have information you wish you had
You've got a lot to learn
So go on
You did what you came here to do
I minded my P's and my Q's
And I have information you wish you had
Don't have a lot to lose

Inspired by Stieg Larson's story The Girl Who Played With Fire and Joseph Merrick (often referred to as John Merrick) The Elephant Man. I wrote this song in 2008 or 2009 and have recorded lots of demos of it.

Warm As June
Words and Music: John Isaac Davey
It was Memorial Day
We went marching
In the old people’s parade
And we left our shoes
On the courthouse lawn
We threw candy to the kids
And sang our songs
And we bummed smokes
Off of ladies in casinos
And watched the desperate
Play the slot machines
And we burned a boat
Pushed it out onto the lake
And the skeletal remains
Washed up next day
So there we were
We were bragging on our friends
Behind their backs
And we were sure
That the Summer was coming fast
Around the tracks
Our hearts were full as the moon
And our hearts were warm as June
