Author: Henry Bond File Type: pdf What if Jacques Lacan--the brilliant and eccentric Parisian psychoanalyst--had worked as a police detective, applying his theories to solve crimes? This may conjure up a mental film clip starring Peter Sellers in a trench coat, but in Lacan at the Scene, Henry Bond makes a serious and provocative claim that apparently impenetrable events of violent death can be more effectively unraveled with Lacans theory of psychoanalysis than with elaborate, technologically advanced forensic tools. Bonds exposition on murder expands and develops a resolutely Zizekian approach. Seeking out radical and unexpected readings, Bond unpacks his material utilizing Lacans neurosis-psychosis-perversion grid. Bond places Lacan at the crime scene and builds his argument through a series of archival crime scene photographs from the 1950s--the period when Lacan was developing his influential theories. Bond takes us inside the perimeter set by police tape, guiding us into a series of explicit, even terrifying, murder scenes. It is not the horror of the ravished and mutilated corpses that draws his attention instead, he interrogates seemingly minor details from the everyday, isolating and rephotographing what at first seems insignificant a single high-heeled shoe on a kitchen table carefully folded clothes placed over a chair a plate of chocolate biscuits on a dinner table lewd graffiti inscribed on a train carriage door an arrangement of workmans tools in a forest clearing. From these mundane details he carefully builds a robust and comprehensive manual for Lacanian crime investigation that can stand beside the FBIs standard-issue Crime Classification Manual. Henry Bond is Senior Lecturer in Photography at Kingston University in Surrey, England. In 1990, with Sarah Lucas, Bond organized the art exhibition East Country Yard Show, which was influential in the formation and development of the YBA art movement together with Damien Hirst, Angela Bulloch and Liam Gillick, the two were the earliest of the YBAs. Bonds visual art tends to appropriation and pastiche he has exhibited work made collaboratively with YBA artists including a photograph made with Sam Taylor-Wood and the Documents Series, made with Liam Gillick. In the 1990s, Bond was a photojournalist working for British fashion, music, and youth culture magazine The Face. In 1998, his photobook of street fashions in London The Cult of the Street was published. His Point and Shoot (Cantz, 2000), explored the photo-genres of surveillance, voyeurism and paparazzi photojournalism. The Semiotics of Love brings together work on early symbolism, literary practices, and contemporary communication on the theme of romance and the idea of love to forge an understanding of the semiotic-cultural side of romance. Moving beyond psychological and neuroscientific scholarly analyses of love, Marcel Danesi works to interrogate the cultural constructions of love across societies. This book analyzes romantic love from the general perspective of semioticsthat is, from its more generic interpretive angle, rather than its more technical one. The specific analytical lens used is based on the notion that we convert our feeling structures into sign structures (words, symbols) and sign-based constructions (texts, rituals, etc.), which then allow us to reflect upon something cognitively, rather than just experience it physically and emotionally. **About the Author Marcel Danesi is Professor of Semiotics and Anthropology at the University of Toronto, Canada. He is renowned for his work in several areas of semiotic study, including pop culture and metaphor. He has been a guest on several broadcast outlets, including National Public Radio. Among his major recent publications are The History of the Kiss! The Birth of Popular Culture (Palgrave, 2013) Murder in Plain English , with Michael Arntfield (2017) and Of Cigarettes, High Heels, and Other Interesting Things An Introduction to Semiotics, 3rd edition (Palgrave, 2018). His work has been featured in the New York Times , Toronto Star , and Psychology Today , among other print publications. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of Semiotica , the leading journal in semiotics.

Yoruba culture has been a part of the Americas for centuries, brought from Africa during the transatlantic slave trade and maintained in various forms ever since. In Oduduwas Chain, Andrew Apter explores a wide range of fascinating historical and ethnographic examples and offers a provocative rethinking of African heritage in Black Atlantic Studies. Focusing on Yoruba history and culture in Nigeria, Apter applies a generative model of cultural revision that allows him to identify formative Yoruba influences without resorting to the idea that culture and tradition are fixed. For example, Apter shows how the association of African gods with Catholic saints can be seen as a strategy of empowerment, explores historical locations of Yoruba gender ideologies and their variations in the Atlantic world, and much more. He concludes with a rousing call for a return to Africa in studies of the Black Atlantic, resurrecting a critical notion of culture that allows us to transcend Western inventions of African while taking them into account. **

Haldane an Smart show that the dispute over the existence of God is very much alive among the best philosophers at the end of the twentieth century. Linda Zagzebski, University of Oklahoma This book show contemporary academic philosophy at its best. Scientific and Medical Network ReviewFrom the Back CoverThe issue of whether or not there is a God is one of the oldest and most widely disputed philosophical questions. It is a debate that spreads far across the range of philosophical questions about the status of science, the nature of mind, the character of good and evil, the epistemology of experience and testimony, and so on. In this book two philosophers, each committed to unambiguous versions of belief and disbelief, debate the central issues of atheism and theism. Smart opens the debate by arguing that theism is philosophically untenable and seeks to explain metaphysical truth in the light of total science. Haldane continues the discussion by affirming that the existence of the world, and the possibility of our coming to have knowledge of it, depend upon the existence of a creating, sustaining, personal God. This is followed by replies, where each philosopher has the chance to respond and to defend his position. This second edition contains new essays by each philosopher, responding to criticisms and building on their previous work.

The book seeks to demonstrate the ways in which collective impact approaches have guided the development of literacy coalitions over time. Since community collaboration strategies developed to address social issues, coalitions have grown from small networking organizations to powerful forces for change. The history of literacy coalitions offers a timeline outlining the why, who, what, where, when and how of communities that were influenced by social and political changes and the ways coalitions responded and thrived. The lack of literacy has held back economic development in the US and coalitions shine a light on issues associated with illiteracy and low school achievement. Not all coalitions succeed and the book explores models of success, funding strategies, evaluation and impact. The goal is to assist those developing coalitions by providing not only lessons learned but a blueprint for success. **

One of the most thought-provoking and vivid essayists of the twentieth century, George Orwell fought the injustices of his time with singular vigor through pen and paper. In this selection of essays, he ranges from reflections on his boyhood schooling and the profession of writing to his views on the Spanish Civil War and British imperialism.Quotes from the bookThe truth, it is felt, becomes untruth when your enemy utters it. ...men can only be highly civilized while other men, inevitably less civilized, are there to guard and feed them. There are books that one reads over and over again, books that become part of the furniture of ones mind and alter ones whole attitude to life, books that one dips into but never reads through, books that one reads at a single sitting and forgets a week later.Readers reviewsIf you ask me, essays are George Orwells true talent. (Ned Ryerson, goodreads.com)It is a spectacular collection of Orwells best essays and what struck me while reading it was the vast array of topics that Orwell took as his subjects. (Jessica, goodreads.com)Whats funny about Orwell is that everybody thinks he is on their side, but this collection made me more fully aware that his worldview is firmly that of a liberal democratic socialist.
